At the start of the summer, we asked our members to creatively chronicle their summer, using journal entries, letters, short poems or any other style. The idea was that they would explore how their personal experiences influence their writing and how they can capture their memories and feelings into works of art.

Rad the Delightfully Bad – A Lit Contest

Due to weather issues (aka, Irene), this contest's deadline has been extended to Monday Sept 5th at midnight CST.

A first sentence is a first impression. If it's off, then the rest of the story will be out of beat. And if it's bad enough, then that first sentence might dissuade a reader to call a cease-and-desist right there and not read a single word more.
Unless that first line is so terribly and utterly bad that it is actually perfect-prose gold.
Each year, Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest is held to discover the single worst opening sentence imaginable. The site proclaims:
The Bulwer-Lytton Fiction contest challenges entrants to compose bad opening sentences to imaginary novels takes its name from the Victorian novelist Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, who began his "Paul Clifford" with "It was a dark and stormy night."
But these sentences are far too good to let lie. On to your challenge!

On the Poet is a project where poets write about each other's literary pieces to share their views and interpretations. By doing so, we also hope to bring their works to a new audience!
This was originally an idea introduced by ~MeineSehnsucht which was later on turned into a community project by $namenotrequired. His mom looks at him lovingly, "Happy birthday."

The car spins out of control and he screams. His mom grits her teeth and slams her foot on the brake pedal. A truck speeds towards them, horn blaring, but it's too late; she reaches for him and cries, "I love —"

When he wakes up from the coma, she's already gone.

"— you," his dad whispers angrily, cheeks wet with tears.
The boy starts to tremble in his hospital bed. "Dad?"

Writers Welcome Wagon RevivalAre you a new writer to DeviantART and perhaps trying to discover what the Literature community has to offer to you? In getting started here, all of us realize how vast this community is and how easily one can feel mesmerized (and confused) by everything that this diverse website has to offer. In the past few years, the community has grown in size and if you are looking for a wonderful chance to get involved but not quite sure where to begin, this is the place for you! So on that note, my first question is: where are the writers?
A Few Years Ago…
The lovely `GeneratingHype asked us to go in search of new writers and to bring them to his attention. Using his original guide as my inspiration, it is my sincere hope to revive this extremely helpful initiative. I want to bring some new writers into the mix and also give other deviants trying to find their unique niche within our growing community

Breaking in to Lit!Introduction
Literature has long been considered one of the closest knit communities on deviantART. As a result, some people find it difficult to "break in" to the Lit crowd. There are rumors of elitism, difficulty in getting exposure, and lack-luster appreciation for the incredible work that goes into writing a good piece of prose or a well structured poem.
If you look at a painting you can see amazing detail, great use of color, and the importance of the subject immediately. You know it came from the artist's imagination and that he or she had to spend hours translating that to a canvas. The tangibility of the work is right in front of you. With writing, it is not quite the same. The effort the author puts into the work can only be appreciated if readers put in their own effort to read the work. The gratification is not instant, which is one reason the lit community is so close knit.

The Contest

We believe that much of writers' inspiration is drawn from themselves and that everything they know and experience influences their writing. This contest is an invitation for you to explore how your own experiences impact your writing and also to explore a hobby that is extremely beneficial for all writers – journaling. It’s a way to capture your memories, the people you meet and those small quips in your head you just don’t want to forget.

So what is the contest, exactly? Chronicle your summer. It doesn't matter exactly what format you use – journal entries, letters, short poems, or anything else that you feel creatively defines your summer. We want snapshots of your life – pieces of a story or relationship and the memories that you have experienced. Your entry should follow a story throughout the summer months with different events explained in detail, such as several journal entries describing the burgeoning romantic relationship of two teens, or letters from a daughter to her parents.

Although your submissions do not have to be true, but we encourage you to use real people and events as your inspiration! It also doesn't have to be first person; be as creative as you like.

The Rules

– Any deviant who is a member of #theWrittenRevolution can participate!
– The submission should be new and created for this contest.
– One submission per deviant for each category (prose and poetry).
– Each submission must have at least three events explained in detail.*
– All submissions should be linked via note to #theWrittenRevolution.
_{*Please put all journal entries/letters/anything else in the same deviation. This will make judging a lot more efficient!}

The deadline is September 1st. We'd like to mention that those of you who are not going through the summer season at this time are still free to enter and we apologize that this contest seems to be directed at a specific part of the globe.

The categories will be the same as they were for our previous contests. There will be one overall winner, as well as a prose winner and a poetry winner. There will also be honourable mentions who will be featured along with the rest of the winners.

Im gonna enter this!
Know how it said you have to describe three events? Well I've written out one event so far, and I wanted to publish it to DA on it's own. Can I still enter it in the competition with the rest of it (I'm thinking of it in terms of three different parts) even though I'm posting this one part to DA?
